Dominican Republic

Religions

The Dominican has many different religions but the most prominent one is Roman Catholic. About 95% of the population practices it. Protestants take up 2% of the population and Judaism takes up the rest. Many Roman Catholic homes are decorated with works of art that contain the Virgin Mary. These pictures are supposed to protect the home from any evil. Children in Catholic homes are taught to pray or ask for blessings from relatives. Some sayings are Bendición, tía (Bless me, aunt) and Dios te bendiga (May God bless you). Rosarios are large processions that are held in hope to cure an illness or help with natural disasters such as droughts or hurricanes.  A cross and a rosary are carried by leader. Musicians then follow behind and play flutes, guitars, and other instruments. After the musicians, people follow along the line singing and praying. Another religious practice is ensalmo. Ensalmo is a healing chant that is performed by elderly women for people in need. Both men and women can be brujos, also known as witch doctors. These people use herbs for healing and they also use it to banish evil spirits.

*I think this country has a very unique mix of religions because most of these religions are separated into different countries all over the world and they aren't found together.
