Dominican Republic

Geography

Location http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/namerica/caribb/do.htm
The Dominican Republic is located on the eastern side of Hispaniola. It is roughly about two times the size of New Hampshire and covers around 18,792 square miles.  The inner part of the island contains the Cordillera Central, which is a mountain range. The highest point of this range is Pico Duarte, which is also the highest point in the Caribbean. The mountains also have Alpine forests within them. Many of the country's rivers begin at the top of the mountains and travel downward towards the Caribbean Sea.  The main rivers are Yaque del Norte, Yaque del Sur, Isabela, and the Ozama. There is a fertile reigon right below the Cordillera mountains where the rivers empty out into the ocean. This valley is called Cibao Valley. Most of the region is tropical but the southwest part of the country is deserts.

*I think the Dominican Republic has mountains because it is an island and islands are usually mountains or volcanos that are pushed up from the bottom of the ocean.

Climate

Weather in this country is usually pretty nice. It's mainly hot, humid, and tropical.  Starting in May and going through October is their summer months. Summer is the hottest and the rainiest season throughout the year. The temperature is around 90 degrees all throughout summer with August being it's hottest month.  May has the highest rain average compared to any other month, with the average being 7 inches. The least rainy month is February, with its average being 1.7. December through March is the Dominican Republics cooler season with temperatures around 70 degrees. The western and southwestern regions are like a desert because of deforestation and little rain fall. Hurricanes pose the greatest natural disaster threat to the Dominican Republic. They hit this country once about every two years.

*I think the climate the Dominican Republic is wonderful. I would love to have winters be around seventy degrees instead of twenty below zero.
